Samsung entered the smartwatch game very early - the first iteration of the Galaxy Gear came out in 2013 - a full 2 years before Apple released theirs. And while it had very good intentions, it was a little too clunky and tech-y looking for the average watch-wearer. Fast forward a couple years however, and it’s a different story. Gear has grown up, and the new Gear S2, particularly the ‘classic’ version with its leather strap, is a very adult looking gadget. They’ve gone with a full, round face using a 1.2 inch AMOLED display, so you can expect it to look just a vibrant as any of Samsung’s flagship smartphone lineup.
On the back you have an optical heartrate monitor for fitness tracking, and Samsung’s S-health suite will also track your activity levels, count steps for you, and even let you plot your water vs caffeine intake to make sure you’re not getting too dehydrated. Battery life is always a concern with wearables, but luckily the S2 has enough juice in it this time around so that you’ll never have to worry about charging until you get back home, and as far as we’re concerned that’s what counts. The S2 comes in a number of different color and material options, and starts at $299.
