Fitbit surge, the latest fitness-focused wearable from Fitbit, offers more features than any fitness tracker we’ve ever seen before. Unlike previous iterations, Surge is wider and more watch-like than the slimmer Fitbit force and flex. As for the on-board sensors, you get GPS tracking to map your runs and bike rides, a 3-axis accelerometer, a gyroscope, digital compass, optical heart rate monitor, and an altimeter for tracking your vertical distance traveled as well.
Those of you who don’t like charging your wearables often will definitely enjoy the battery life. On one to two hours of charge you’ll be able to go up to 5 days without having to recharge again. Keep in mind though, that’s only when you’re not using the GPS, which is very power hungry. As you might hope, all of the activity tracking occurs automatically, so you won’t have to tell the device the difference between climbing stairs, running, and biking, for example.
And last but not least, you will be able to receive call and text notifications on the touchscreen display, control music playback, and also use the device as a silent alarm, vibrating on your wrist when it’s time to wake up. The FitBit Surge will cost you $249, and can be pre-ordered on their site right now. If you want to wait until it actually hits the market, we’re probably looking at some time in early 2015. Let us know what you think of the Surge in the comments, and we’ll see you guys next time on Big Shiny Things.
