It’s that time of year when Hollywood transitions firmly into awards territory. There are some fantastic-looking movies making their way to screens in the next few months and one that’s getting a ton of early praise is Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario. Sicario, which is a slang term for hitman, features Emily Blunt as an idealistic DEA agent sent south of the border to help with Mexico’s escalating drug war and her performance is already being bet on as an Oscar front-runner. Playing opposite Blunt is Josh Brolin as a task force official and Benicio Del Toro as a ruthless mercenary turned informant. Following on the heels of Villeneuve’s one-two punch of Prisoners and Enemy, Sicario feels like the next step on a filmmaking trajectory that should see this experienced director become one of the greats.
So with Sicario set to become one of the better fictional explorations of the war on drugs, here are ten other movies that brought the intensity and danger of the drug trade to the big screen in white-knuckle fashion.
