If you were lucky enough to escape middle school unstained by the festering doo-doo that is incessant bullying than you're hopefully aware that you managed to win the social status lottery. But many were (and still are) filled with anxiety at the idea of another day walking the halls of their school. Be extra thankful if you graduated pre social media. Bullying today doesn't stop when you leave school. It can follow you to FB or Snapchat. The assaults keep coming when you're sitting down in front of your computer at night. Proving that there really is no such thing as a safe space. Somebody tell the Univeristy kids. But all of it is a temporary gauntlet that will pass (seriously, it will) even though it may feel like a nightmare to manage now. What's more (cliché alert) dealing with weak-minded turds like bullies may even make you stronger in the long run.
Thankfully while today's victims are waiting out the clock on their easily targeted awkwardness, highschools all over North America are fighting to eliminate and manage any bullying issues that arise on and off school grounds. The rally is unsurprising seeing as in extreme cases lives have been lost. That said, one Pennsylvania school may have gone too far when the kindness workshop they offered involved teaching kindness by singling out kids. The reason? To show them what being bullied for being gay, or poor, or uneducated, or awkward felt like. The kids ended up feeling, well, bullied. The approach was not a favorable one as far as parents were concerned. A solid effort that missed the mark. To our knowledge no one was wedgied or got a swirly during the workshops. You'll get the hang of it good guys. We believe in you.
I talk all about it on today's News House.
