The Good Lie might not be the type of movie you run to see the day it hits the theaters, but it is the type of movie you absolutely should go see.
I know. This sounds preachy, but I mean it. What makes this different than other heavy-handed "message" films is that it really goes out of its way to skip the Hollywood-style violence and star-powered moments. This is the story of three Sudanese refugees given the chance to resettle in America, in Kansas, where their encounter with employment agency counselor forever changes all of their lives. The plight of Mamere, Jeremiah and Paul is the real story here though, and Witherspoon's helpful counselor part takes a backseat to the most important part of the whole endeavor. Mamere, played by Anthony Oceng with deft subtlety and a gentle touch, is the star here... and it works.
If you know nothing of the journey of The Lost Boys Of Sudan (casualties of a brutal civil war between Nuer and Dinka during the second Sudanese civil war), this film will inspire you to want to know more. That is the best thing a film like this can aim to accomplish. When I spoke with screenwriter Margaret Nagle, she was proud that she had held her ground and made that story the priority. These days, that's a rare thing in a film that has an A-List star. She can rest easy knowing that she succeeded.
