The USFL was once a bustling football league with bright young stars. Then they listened to Donald Trump.
The NFL has the longest off-season of any major sport
Fans have to wait seven long months for football’s return
But this wasn’t always the case…
In the mid-1980s there were actually 2 viable pro football leagues
The NFL played during the fall and winter
And the United States Football League (USFL) took the spring
Started in 1983, the USFL had a real chance at success
It had a national television contract with ABC and players with legit talent…
Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker turned down the NFL to join the USFL’s New Jersey Generals
Jim Kelly was a USFL MVP
And Steve Young Played for LA
Things were going well…
Then the USFL’s owners made a massive mistake
They listened to Donald Trump
Trump owned the New Jersey Generals
And he urged his fellow owners to move their schedule to the fall to compete head-to-head with the NFL
The move to fall would be the league’s downfall
After the decision, the USFL lost viability in six of its twelve markets
As a last ditch effort the USFL filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL
The USFL would win the verdict…
But were only awarded $3 for nominal damages
It was the end of the USFL
And ultimately, the NFL trumped The Donald
