In origin, the conditions on the surface of the Earth had little to do with an idyllic paradise. Temperatures were those of hell. However, life evolved freely in that environment. Today, in many regions of the planet the environment remains almost as hostile as ever. In Antarctica the temperature sometimes drops to 80º C when the Sahara Desert thermometer exceeds 60º C in the shade. But these contrasting ecosystems have something in common: they harbor life and its inhabitants have designed thermal regulation systems that have often inspired humans.
