Did Apple Really Just Fix The Terrible Infotainment Systems In Cars?

With the push to make everything in your life a little bit smarter, it was only a matter of time before tech companies started taking a closer look at cars.

Today, Apple quietly announced their solution to this problem in the form of CarPlay. With it comes Siri-based voice control and touchscreen navigation of all of the tasks you might want to perform on your car. Use CarPlay to listen to music on your iPhone, or stream from Spotify and iHeartRadio. Instead of the clunky navigation experience found as an "upgrade" in cars, you get hands-free Apple Maps navigation. Take calls, send texts, or even browse YouTube from your car's onboard display.

At launch this year, you'll see CarPlay in select cars from Honda, Hyundai, Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Expect to see cars announced with support for it at the Geneva Motor Show this week. And if your favorite car manufacturer wasn't on that list, don't worry: Broader support from BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Kia, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota is coming too. In order to use CarPlay, you will have to own an iPhone 5 or later, though, so keep that in mind.

Either way, we're really excited to see Apple work its user-experience magic in a world that has been behind on tech for far too long. We'll be back with more news once we start seeing CarPlay in some real-world cars, but for now, we wanted you guys to at least be in the loop.
