Craig Melvin reflects on his incredible journey to becoming the new anchor of 'Today'. From his humble beginnings — growing up with a mom who worked two jobs while his dad struggled with alcoholism — to now stepping into Hoda Kotb’s shoes, Craig shares his gratitude and surprise for landing this role after decades of hard work and hustle.

“I’ve always been pretty aw-shucks and gobsmacked at where I’ve been,” Craig admits, reflecting on his career trajectory. He got teary-eyed when his family surprised him during his first broadcast in the anchor chair on January 13th, underscoring how family is always at the heart of his journey. When asked about stepping into Hoda’s shoes, Craig responds, “Those aren’t shoes you step into. I have taken those shoes, and we put those shoes on the shelf, because that’s an impossible feat. I’m just gonna wear my shoes, and keep my fingers crossed.”

Craig also opens up about the moment he learned he was being offered the role. “In our line of work, when both of your bosses come in [to your office] together, it’s either really good, or it’s really bad,” he shares, revealing the surreal moment when he realized his hard work had paid off. He discusses sharing the news with his wife and mother, who were both sworn to secrecy. “Hoda was actually the second person I heard from after I found out that I was getting the gig. She said it’s going to be the ride of a lifetime, to take it all in, to try to be as present as much as possible. Hoda used to always remind me: We get to do this.”
