In the nearly fifty years since his passing, there hasn’t been a feature film dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr … until now. Indie director Ava DuVernay and star David Oyelowo tackle the legacy in Selma, a retelling of a pivotal battle for civil rights in Alabama staged between King and a reluctant US government. Perhaps there’s no time like the present for an MLK movie. The events in the film are immediately piercing given the resemblance to what’s happening in Ferguson. We sat down with DuVernay and Oyelowo to discuss the film’s timeliness, what Ferguson could take away from Selma and whether inequality still exists in Hollywood in the Obama era.
Selma Opens in NY/LA on December 25th and nationwide January 9th.
