Verstappen blitzes home lap record.
Red Bull Racing driver eclipses best time at Zandvoort in front of his Dutch fans.
Max Verstappen prepared for the iconic Monaco Grand Prix by attending the Jumbo Racedagen and blitzing the track record at Zandvoort in front of a fervent home crowd.
The circuit has not hosted a Formula 1 grand prix since 1985 when Niki Lauda proved victorious, and the 19-year-old Red Bull Racing driver unoficially set a best lap time of 1 minute 19.511 seconds.
That eclipsed the previous best set by Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer some 16 years ago by more than three tenths of a second.
Driving the team’s 2012 Formula 1 car for the demonstration event, Verstappen blazed a trail on track before performing donuts, his engineers genuinely concerned they might run out of tyres on the hard-wearing surface.
Verstappen also took time out to sign autographs for fans, who turned up in their droves, as well as doing a parade lap in a tour bus, and performing alongside a magician.
