Synopsis: After a plague of zombies invades a family’s once-peaceful hometown, the havoc they wreak is deadly. Eyes of the Dead is a zombie thriller that immerses the audience in a pulse-pounding, innovative survival experience. Relying heavily on practical special effects and a POV perspective, what you see on camera is what was filmed on that fateful day of the zombie invasion.
DIRECTORS STATEMENT (Ben Samuels - 2018):
EYES OF THE DEAD is an immersive filmic experience. More than simple jump scares and POV gimmicks, it’s an emotional journey of a damaged couple finding their way back to each other, even as the world ends around them. Setting the action on a farm, where life and sustenance are created, was essential to the themes of the film, informing the central ideas of life, death, and rebirth, while also layering the greater conspiracy with evocation of the corruption of Agent Orange in Vietnam from an agricultural pesticide to a weapon of mass destruction. Out of Eddie and Carla’s loss comes new life; out of creating life, comes the means to unleash horrific death.
My brother and I assembled the perfect team for the project. The Key Grip built the 60lb camera rig from scratch to accomplish the long takes and withstand the film’s demanding sequences. Knowing the actors would be acting “down the barrel” I worked to ensure they had what they needed to carry the story’s emotional arc. After Day 1 they had all accepted the camera as a legitimate and living character in our world. It is to their remarkable credit that they carried long scenes without the benefit of cutting away, let alone a scene partner.
Far too early in life, I saw John Carpenter’s THE THING and was mesmerized by the timeless brilliance of the practical effects. Intent on doing as much “on the day” as we could, we enlisted Tolin FX and his team, including numerous contestants and victors from the hit TV show FACE/OFF. Their creature designs and impeccable craftsmanship brought the fearsome to life.
For everyone who worked on EYES OF THE DEAD, we endeavored to bring genre fans something novel and to fulfill every buff’s fantasy: the opportunity to drop into a zombie outbreak and try to survive alongside real characters with real stakes. For me, behind the camera playing “Eddie,” I’m excited to welcome you into the character and let you take my place in the struggle to survive.
