Ever wonder why the Pittsburgh Steelers are the only NFL team with their logo on just one side of their helmet?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only NFL team with their logo on just one side of their helmet
The reason traces back to the origin of the team’s iconic emblem
The famous design consists of three diamond-like shapes
The technical term for the shape is “astroid hypocycloid”
We’ll just stick with “diamond thingymabobs”
The diamond design was borrowed from the Steelmark logo belonging to the US Steel Corporation
The Steelmark logo was used in a campaign to educate Americans about the importance of steel
The colors represented the three materials used to produce steel
Yellow for coal, orange for iron ore, and blue for steel scrap
Now you know the secret recipe
In the early 1960s, the Steelers co-opted the Steelmark design
Then later petitioned to change the word inside the logo from "Steel" to "Steelers"
And the design was complete
However, the team was not certain the new logo would look good on their then gold helmets
So, they tested the design on just one side
But after finishing that season with a successful 9-5 record, they made the one-sided look permanent
And it’s never been changed because the team is as stingy as it’s defense
